Generative AI
AI systems that create new content such as text, images, audio, video, or code from prompts rather than only classifying existing data.
Definition
Generative AI refers to models that produce novel outputs. Text generators are LLMs; image and video generators are usually diffusion or transformer models; audio models synthesise speech and music. The term contrasts with discriminative AI, which labels or scores inputs. Generative tools are evaluated on quality, controllability, rights, and cost.
Why it matters when choosing a tool
Knowing which kind of generation a tool performs, and how outputs are licensed, determines whether it fits your workflow and whether you can use the results commercially.
