Synthetic data

Artificially generated data used to train or test models when real data is scarce, sensitive, or expensive to label.

Definition

Synthetic data is produced by models or simulations to mimic real distributions, for example generated conversations to train a support bot or rendered images for vision models. It can improve coverage and protect privacy but may encode the generator's biases or drift from reality, so it is usually mixed with real examples and validated.

Why it matters when choosing a tool

Vendors increasingly rely on synthetic data; understanding it helps interpret claims about training and evaluation.
