AI content detection
Tools that estimate whether text or media was produced by AI, which are probabilistic and prone to false positives.
Definition
Detectors look for statistical patterns typical of model output, but paraphrasing, editing, and newer models reduce reliability, and they can flag non-native writers unfairly. Institutions use them cautiously, and provenance standards such as watermarking and content credentials offer more reliable signals when present.
Why it matters when choosing a tool
Do not rely on detectors alone for consequential decisions; prefer provenance signals and process-based policies.
