Embedding
A numerical vector that represents the meaning of text, images, or other data so similar items sit close together.
Definition
Embeddings are produced by models that map inputs to points in a high-dimensional space where semantic similarity becomes geometric closeness. They power semantic search, clustering, recommendations, and the retrieval step in RAG. Different embedding models trade off quality, dimensionality, language coverage, and cost.
Why it matters when choosing a tool
Semantic search features in knowledge tools, meeting assistants, and site search all depend on embeddings, which is why they find relevant results even when keywords differ.
